The answer is Edmund Goulding, born in Feltham in 1891.  After work as an actor and producer in London, he went on to become 
a director in Hollywood in the silents of the 20s and into the sound era.

He directed several notable movies, including the 1939 ultra-weepie classic, ‘Dark Victory’, with Bette Davis at the top of her form as the spoilt rich heroine.

            And... Ronald Reagan in an early role as one of her admirers.

Other films worth seeing include ‘The Dawn Patrol’, wth Errol Flynn and David Niven enjoying First World War flying heroics; 
‘Grand Hotel’ in which Greta Garbo famously spurns any company; and ‘The Razor’s Edge’, wherein Tyrone Power attempts to
 find the meaning of (his) life by embarking on a spiritual world odyssey.

The same actor also appears very much against type in one of Goulding’s most memorable films: ‘Nightmare Alley’ is a lesser known 
but quite bizarre story of nefarious goings-on among a group of carnival performers.  A strange movie but well worth seeing.

Though never among the elite bunch of film directors, Goulding was a competent all-rounder who died in 1959.
